Deeper.co.za: Rob Heenan - 116 BPM

Deep House, House No Comments

This is the latest mix from our mates at deeper.co.za

Rob’s back in the driving seat this month, along with some utterly amazing classic tracks that cannot be forgotten. Sit back and enjoy this sweet sound…..

In Rob’s own words:

”Thought I’d do a deep house mix at a tempo a bit slower than what I’d usually play…the first half an hour is relatively deep, you’ll find artists such as Larry Heard, Dubtribe and the likes…half way through the mix you’ll find it more uptempo with a Martin Solveig classic of mine…I then wind down the mix with some new European numbers and finish it off with a MAW classic - hope ye like it!”

Guido Schneider - Global Breakthrough - Africa Radio Mix

Electro, Global Breakthrough, International in SA, Minimal, Techno No Comments

Poker Flat Recordings’ brightest rising star, Guido Schneider has been producing electronic music since the early 90’s. Strongly influenced by “EBM“ he started his first project with a friend in 1991 with releases on SPV.

In 1995 he founded his own Label “Neue Welten“ based in Celle, Germany. In 1996 he moved to Berlin where he began to fully focus on music. His productions and co-productions (e.g. as “Schneider & Radecki“ with Sammy Dee) always sounded sort of minimal, but were also exceptionally functional as he dared to stick his head out of his soundlab at an early stage. This together with the experiences from various live performances helped to perfect his tracks.

Guedo was the headline act in November 2007 for one of the many succesfuly Global Breakthrough Festival Events which took place in CPT & JHB where he we played alongside a host of South Africa’s top DJ’s in the genre.

Here is the Global Breakthrough promotional radio mix, which Guido put together - enjoy this one!

Richard the Third - Gluttonous mixes of pop and electronica

Electro, Richard the Third 1 Comment

Richard the Third is a Jozi based DJ whose style has been described in SL Magazine as a “gluttonous mix of pop and electronica”. If you’re on the dancefloor at bar/clubs such as Tokyo Star, 88, Carfax, Fuel or other such haunts, and Rich is on the ones and twos, expect such revelry to go down.

The Third, as he is sometimes called, cut his teeth as a hip-hop producer making beats for the likes of Hympahtic Thabs, Waddy Jones and Tumi Molekane. He later went on to work in the film and TV industry making jingles and designing sounds to picture. His solo music production, sometimes under the alias Safe Mode, is much like his DJing style: a blend of quirky electronica, hip-hop beats and thumping dance-floor influences, and has appeared on numerous compilations such as Breathe Sunshine vol 2 and Dub Vaults vol 2.

After attending the Red Bull Music Academy in Rome in 2004, Richard knew he needed to be a DJ. He believes that the days of one-genre dance DJ superstars are over. Influenced by overseas scenesters such as Diplo, Soulwax and Simian Mobile Disco, and local heroes such as the Real Estate Agents and Joburg’s indie/electro spinners, he likes to mix in popular radio friendly tunes, remixed to give them a twist, eardrum banging electro and low-slung hip-tronica. He has also remixed local artists and bands such as 340 mils and Mtkidu, and made his own mashups such as Felix Laband over Michael Jackson, to give his sets a unique flavour.

We have 2 debut mixes for listenup.za.net from Richard available for download.

Freestylers - SA Tour Promo Mix

Breakbeat, International in SA No Comments

These breakbeat banditos first hooked up after a chance conversation exposed their joint love, some might say bordering on obsession, for music “We were just chatting about old hip hop records”, recalls Aston. “And realised we both owned all the same tunes. We’d both been making house and Matt had this idea for an electro track so we just started working together.” That electro track became ‘Drop The Bomb’ and on release in ‘97, launched the pair as the Freestylers.

“The first record we ever sampled was by an act called Freestyle”, Aston explains. “At that time sampling played such a major part in our sound, we felt it would be a fitting name.

Raised on a diet of Public Enemy, Afrika Bambaataa and, erm, The Jungle Book (”That soundtrack was the first record I ever bought”, laughs Aston. “I was the original junglist!”), the Freestylers sound is rooted in hip hop but has evolved into a unique British concoction, taking in everything from dancehall to reggae, electro to soul and breakbeat to drum and bass.

“It’s pretty tricky trying to sum us up,” admits Matt. “Our sound is pretty raw, raw and very instant.”

One half of the freestylers, Matt Cantor is touring South Africa for the next few weeks starting off with a gig at Carfax in Jozi on Friday!

Here is a recent set from the Freestylers themselves, from the World Music Conference - Future Sounds of Breaks event in Miami!

Ashchest Ant - April Mix

Ashchest Ant, Electro, House 1 Comment

After 15 years of hardrock, folk and reggae worship, Ashchest (ant) discovered the stimulating effect of following the progression of trance type dance music. Ant is on the move with a strong passion for quality dance music and sound re-production. Experience the seemless mixing of most current dance music when this man steps in behind the decks, always able to put down something completely different from the previous.

For bookings or demo’s please contact: ashchest@electro-activate.co.za

“The latest addition my studio are two pioneer CDJ800mk2’s - been spinning on ‘em since October 2007 and really enjoy mixing tighter sets………I do still find it very entertaining dropping a 12″ every now and then and realised that a more solid mix is achievable with needles and a platter…”

Ant is also the owner of ‘Electro-Activate’. A dance music production company that first appeared on the SA underground scene on 2006 and managed to present a new style and look in party decor. Today Electro-Activate is able to put down the full package, including the best in pro-audio gear and cutting edge dance beats.
